Find the Right Air Purification System
Dust, pollen, pet dander, and smoke are all airborne pollutants that we can breathe in on an everyday basis. Inhaling large amounts of dust in the air can have negative effects for your health and can cause coughing, irritation of the eyes, and trouble breathing. Whole home air purification systems and air cleaners remove these indoor pollutants and allergens. The added bonus of an air cleaner is that it even helps prolong the life of your HVAC system - keeping its components cleaner. Most purification and air cleaning systems use a high-efficiency or high efficient filter to catch and eliminate the impurities before releasing the clean air back into the room. These air cleaning products are especially helpful for people who suffer from asthma and allergies. Choosing the right product is important to gain its benefit.
MERV Ratings
Air filtration in the HVAC industry has standards by which it is rated, much like everything else. When it comes to filters, the ratings are by a MERV, or Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value. This rating was developed by the American Society of Heating, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Engineers or ASHRAE who rates most things HVAC. MERV ratings vary from 1 to 16 for residential homes, with ratings as high as 20 for industrial settings. The higher the MERV rating, the more efficient the filter will be at trapping airborne particles like pollen, dust and pet dander.
One might think that increasing the rating automatically would be better for your home, but that's not always the case. The higher the MERV rating, the smaller the pores are for air to flow through the filter. This can create more resistance in airflow than your HVAC system is designed to handle, making your system less efficient. Reducing the air flow can create the opposite effect of what you are trying to achieve and can even cause damage to your furnace and air conditioner.
The best way to avoid this problem is to find out what is recommended by the manufacturer to allow maximum airflow. Most furnaces come with recommended MERV ratings. Our Balance Point team can help you make the right decision for your home's air filtration system to make sure you are breathing clean air and you are comfortable inside.
